A company in the US is going to release 750 million genetically modified mosquitos in Florida Keys to solve an endemic! Is that endemic going to cause another pandemic? So why are they doing it. Apparently, a specific species of invasive mosquito is responsible for spreading diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya. However, only females in that species are responsible for the spread after they bite humans (yup, female bites – in mosquitos too!). So Oxitec, the company behind this idea, modified the genes of male mosquitos in such a way that they will only produce male offsprings when mating with female in the wild! This will cause the female population to drop and subsequently reducing the transmission of various disease. Stop here! And those who have not watched Jurassic Park, please do so. Nature will find its own way. It did in the movie and it will in real life! However, the concept is innovative. Male-efficient Mosquitos!
