Pythons and Genetic Algorithm

on

Did you know pythons can grow back their major organs post fasting ?  In some instances their organs increase in volume from 40% to 100%.  A research team has found the genetic markers in pythons responsible for various biological activities which are unique to these species.  The most interesting aspect of the research is how they found the few combinations of genes out of 1700 genes responsible for the metamorphosios which happens to them during their fasting period.

Let me show you what is involved mathematically to find a combination of 10 genes out of a haystack of 1700 genomes.  Think through this as selecting 10 cards from a stack of 1700 cards which results in the maximum value of your hand.  In mathematics this can be written as 1700C10 (nCr).  There are 54 septillion combinations of 10 (genes or cards) if you pick from a stack of 1700.  Septillion = 10 followed by 24 zeroes.  If a computer’s CPU is fast enough to evaluate 1000 combinations per second, it will take this computer 1715 trillion years to find the “best combination” of 10 from a stack of 1700.  Genetic algorithm is a computational construct borrowed from genetic engineerings to solve mathematical problems like these at a much faster rate.

I like this one. I like the 🙂 at the end, too, along with the pun of in their lifetime.

I’d experiment with your blogs more. Write one sentence, use bullet points, make funnier titles, etc. Practice, practice, practice for the next opportunity – do you want to be a big shot PM and have a monthly letter? Or a strategist or whatever. This is your platform to practice.
