For those who are thinking of turning “green” when it comes to their energy consumption – my advice is to wait. Existing silicon-chips based solar panels use thermal energy to produce electricity. In other words, the heat from the sun warms up the solar panels and stimulates electrodes to generate electricity. That’s why these panels are useless when the sun is out (or overcast).
There is much advancement in this field from both commercial and academic participants. In my earlier post I highlighted how researchers have invented a new solar panel chip which converts photons to electricity, similar to how plants convert sunlight to produce energy to survive through photosynthesis. These solar panels will just need light in some form. So even in overcast conditions, your panel will absorb any light to produce even the slightest of energy possible
Now a new research highlights that we don’t even need those ugly panels adorning our roof ! Researchers at RMIT have come with with a compouny of wall paint which when mixed with titanium oxide (already used in our wall paint) and water vapor, creates energy via hydrogen.
Wait before you install those solar panels at your home. Perhaps in few years your entire house helps generate green energy.
